Self-encrypting drive recovery

An Opal self-encrypting drive can be healthy yet expose no user sectors until its locking ranges are authorized.

TCG Opal drives perform encryption inside the storage device and can lock logical ranges after reset. Preboot software, enterprise management, BIOS changes, credential loss, or moving the drive can prevent normal access even when the controller and NAND remain functional.

Understand the symptom

The drive's Locking Security Provider controls access independently from the filesystem.

WHY

What is happening

The Opal specification defines authenticated locking ranges, reset behavior, full-disk encryption, and administrative security providers. The host may see a small shadow MBR, a locked device, or no usable namespace until valid credentials and the expected management workflow unlock it. File recovery cannot bypass the encryption boundary.

What you may see

Symptoms that change the recovery path.

01

Drive appears locked

Management software identifies the device but user LBAs are unavailable.

02

Preboot authentication disappeared

A motherboard, boot, or software change removed the normal unlock workflow.

03

Drive shows a tiny boot area

MBR shadowing may expose only a preboot environment while data ranges remain locked.

04

Access failed after moving the drive

The new system lacks credentials, policy, or management state used by the original host.

Protect the source

Actions that can make the situation worse.

01

PSID revert is destructive

It resets the security state and makes previous encrypted data inaccessible.

02

Secure erase changes encryption keys

Cryptographic erase can be instantaneous and irreversible.

03

Firmware or BIOS experiments alter state

Repeated management changes can complicate the known-good unlock path.

Do this now

Safe steps before evaluation.

01

Preserve credentials and management records

Keep passwords, recovery files, enterprise console details, software versions, and policy exports.

02

Keep the original computer

Motherboard, TPM, preboot environment, and installed management software may be relevant.

03

Document Level 0 discovery safely

Record model, serial, firmware, Opal features, and current lock state without reset commands.

04

Stop revert and erase actions

Do not initialize, PSID revert, sanitize, or change locking-range ownership.

NEPFOSYS process

How a data-first evaluation proceeds.

01

Security-state review

NEPFOSYS distinguishes Opal locking from controller, NAND, partition, and filesystem failure.

02

Authorized unlock planning

Valid credentials and original management context are tested without resetting the source.

03

Post-unlock imaging

Accessible sectors are imaged before filesystem recovery or device reuse.

Questions, answered

What customers ask before starting.

Does PSID revert recover a forgotten password?

No. It resets the drive for reuse and destroys access to the encrypted data.

Can a locked Opal drive be physically healthy?

Yes. The security subsystem can deny LBA access even when the media and controller work normally.

Can data recovery bypass Opal encryption?

No. Recovery requires authorized credentials or an intact legitimate unlock path.
