Fusion Drive recovery

A split Fusion Drive is two devices whose original data relationship must be preserved.

Fusion Drive combines flash storage and a hard drive into one logical volume. If it appears as two disks, loses a member or fails to boot, recreating the pair can erase the structures needed to recover data.

Understand the symptom

The logical volume spans SSD and HDD members with data distributed between them.

WHY

What is happening

Fusion Drive uses CoreStorage or APFS-related structures to present two physical devices as one logical storage space. Frequently accessed data may be on flash while other extents remain on the hard drive. Missing metadata or failure of either member can make the combined filesystem unavailable even when one disk reads normally.

What you may see

Symptoms that change the recovery path.

01

Two internal disks appear

The former logical pair may now show separate flash and hard-drive devices.

02

One member is missing

A failed SSD, HDD, cable or controller can remove part of the address space.

03

Mac shows a flashing folder

The system cannot find a complete bootable logical volume.

04

Disk Utility offers erase or repair

The tool may see physical members but not reconstruct the original combined data.

Protect the source

Actions that can make the situation worse.

01

resetFusion permanently deletes data

Recreating the pair writes new logical structures across both devices.

02

Replacing one member changes the set

A new SSD or HDD does not contain the extents that existed on the failed member.

03

Independent scans miss relationships

Files can span logical extents distributed across both physical devices.

Do this now

Safe steps before evaluation.

01

Power off the Mac

Stop before erase, reinstall or further migration commands.

02

Preserve both members

Keep the original SSD, HDD, cables and Mac labeled as one set.

03

Capture Disk Utility details

Photograph device names, capacities and identifiers without running repair.

04

Record hardware changes

Note any drive replacement, macOS upgrade, split command or earlier failure.

NEPFOSYS process

How a data-first evaluation proceeds.

01

Member assessment

Each physical device is identified and evaluated separately before logical reconstruction.

02

Protected member images

Readable SSD and HDD data is acquired without rebuilding the original pair.

03

Virtual Fusion reconstruction

Logical volume and filesystem relationships are examined from the protected copies.

Questions, answered

What customers ask before starting.

Can I run diskutil resetFusion to fix it?

Only after data is safely backed up. Apple states that recreating a Fusion Drive permanently deletes data on both members.

Is one Fusion Drive member enough for recovery?

Usually not for a complete filesystem because logical extents can be distributed across both devices.

Should I replace the failed hard drive first?

No. Preserve the original SSD and HDD set before any replacement or recreation changes the evidence.
