SD card format prompt

When an SD card asks to be formatted, cancel and protect the card before recording anything else.

A format prompt means the device cannot mount the card's current filesystem. The cause may be unsafe removal, power loss, damaged FAT or exFAT metadata, controller failure, worn flash, or a failing card reader.

Understand the symptom

The card may still contain media even when its filesystem cannot be mounted.

WHY

What is happening

Cameras commonly use FAT32 or exFAT and update directory, allocation, and video-container data during recording. A battery loss or removal can leave a clip unfinalized or filesystem metadata inconsistent. If the card identifies with correct capacity and stable reads, imaging can preserve its current state before filesystem and file-signature reconstruction.

What you may see

Symptoms that change the recovery path.

01

Camera says card error or format

The camera sees media but cannot use the expected filesystem or recording structure.

02

Computer shows RAW

The physical card is detected while its FAT or exFAT volume is not mountable.

03

Photos vanish after an error

Directory or allocation damage can hide files that still occupy flash pages.

04

Card disconnects or changes capacity

Controller, contacts, adapter, reader, or NAND failure may be involved.

Protect the source

Actions that can make the situation worse.

01

Format writes new filesystem data

Camera formatting can overwrite directories, allocation tables, and media headers.

02

New recording overwrites old media

Even one photo or clip can reuse blocks containing missing files.

03

Repair tools modify the card

Filesystem repair can discard entries it considers inconsistent.

Do this now

Safe steps before evaluation.

01

Remove and stop using the card

Power down the camera first, then store the card safely without further recording.

02

Preserve adapters and camera details

Record camera model, format, card brand and capacity, reader, and incident sequence.

03

Use a known-good reader only for imaging

Do not repeatedly test across devices or initialize the card.

04

Save recovery output elsewhere

Recovered photos, videos, images, and logs must go to separate healthy storage.

NEPFOSYS process

How a data-first evaluation proceeds.

01

Card stability review

NEPFOSYS checks identity, capacity, read stability, filesystem, and recording context.

02

Read-only media imaging

Readable flash content is preserved before directory or file reconstruction.

03

Photo and video recovery

Filesystem records, file signatures, and compatible video fragments are organized and verified.

Questions, answered

What customers ask before starting.

Should I quick-format the SD card and then recover files?

No. Formatting writes new structures and is not required for a recovery evaluation.

Can files be recovered if the card shows RAW?

Potentially, if the card can be read stably and the data has not been overwritten. The filesystem and media must be assessed.

Does the lock switch protect deleted files?

It can discourage writes in compliant readers, but it does not repair the card or guarantee every device honors the switch.
