NTFS metadata recovery

A damaged NTFS Master File Table can hide files even when their data clusters still exist.

The Master File Table contains records Windows uses to identify files, folders, attributes and data locations. Corruption can make a volume appear RAW, inaccessible or incomplete without erasing every file body.

Understand the symptom

NTFS uses MFT records as the central map between names, attributes and stored content.

WHY

What is happening

Each file has at least one MFT record containing attributes or references to external data. The root directory, allocation bitmap and other special files also depend on NTFS metadata. Damage to records, their mirror, directory indexes or unreadable sectors can break mounting and enumeration. Imaging first allows reconstruction attempts without altering the original.

What you may see

Symptoms that change the recovery path.

01

Windows reports a corrupt MFT

Primary records or their supporting structures may be inconsistent or unreadable.

02

Volume appears RAW

Windows cannot interpret enough NTFS metadata to mount the filesystem normally.

03

Folders vanish or names are damaged

Directory and file-record relationships may be incomplete even when content remains.

04

CHKDSK requests exclusive repair

Windows has detected inconsistency but repair would write to the source.

Protect the source

Actions that can make the situation worse.

01

CHKDSK modifies metadata

It may orphan records, truncate indexes or convert fragments while seeking consistency.

02

Formatting replaces boot structures

A new NTFS volume can overwrite prior metadata and deleted-record evidence.

03

Bad sectors may underlie corruption

Repeated scans against weak media can turn logical damage into a larger physical problem.

Do this now

Safe steps before evaluation.

01

Cancel repair prompts

Do not format or schedule CHKDSK before the source is protected.

02

Note hardware symptoms

Record slowness, disconnects, SMART warnings and unusual sounds that may explain metadata errors.

03

Stop writing to the volume

Do not copy files onto it, reinstall Windows or save recovery output there.

04

Preserve encryption keys

BitLocker recovery information may be required before NTFS can be interpreted.

NEPFOSYS process

How a data-first evaluation proceeds.

01

Media and metadata triage

NEPFOSYS distinguishes unreadable sectors from a primarily logical NTFS inconsistency.

02

Protected image creation

The best available sector copy is created before reconstruction or repair.

03

Record and content reconstruction

MFT entries, directory indexes, file signatures and allocation relationships are evaluated from the image.

Questions, answered

What customers ask before starting.

Does a corrupt MFT mean the files are gone?

Not necessarily. Metadata can be damaged while file content remains in data clusters. Recovery quality depends on overwrites, media condition and surviving records.

Is CHKDSK a data recovery tool?

No. It repairs filesystem consistency and can change or discard structures. Preserve the source first when the files matter.

What is the MFT mirror?

NTFS keeps limited backup information for critical early MFT records. It is not a complete second copy of every file record.
