MegaRAID recovery planning

A MegaRAID foreign configuration should be previewed and preserved before it is imported or cleared.

MegaRAID marks a configuration foreign when member disks carry virtual-drive metadata that does not match the active controller state. This may follow a controller replacement, cabling change, disk migration, power event, or member dropout.

Understand the symptom

Foreign metadata can describe an intact array, a degraded array, or an incomplete historical state.

WHY

What is happening

Broadcom tools can preview a foreign configuration before import. The preview must be compared with known RAID level, virtual-drive size, member count, spans, security state, and failure sequence. A locked, failed, missing, or incompatible virtual drive may not import normally, and importing the wrong disk set can activate stale data or trigger writes.

What you may see

Symptoms that change the recovery path.

01

Foreign configuration detected

One or more disks contain array metadata not currently active on the controller.

02

Virtual drive is inactive

The controller recognizes topology but has not exposed it for normal I/O.

03

Members are Failed or Missing

The foreign set may not contain enough readable disks for the expected RAID level.

04

Controller replacement changed visibility

A new controller, firmware, cable, or backplane can present existing metadata differently.

Protect the source

Actions that can make the situation worse.

01

Clear removes topology clues

Clearing foreign metadata can make disk roles and virtual-drive relationships harder to reconstruct.

02

Import may activate a stale set

Older disks or incomplete spans can present an outdated filesystem as current.

03

Rebuild can overwrite remaining parity

A replacement or forced-online member may receive large writes before source health is known.

Do this now

Safe steps before evaluation.

01

Capture the preview

Save screenshots or reports showing every foreign virtual drive, RAID level, span, member, state, and capacity.

02

Label all physical disks

Record enclosure slot, serial number, reported state, original controller, and any recent replacements.

03

Stop automatic remediation

Do not clear, import, initialize, force online, rebuild, or change security settings.

04

Preserve controller context

Keep the original controller, cache module, keys, cables, firmware details, and event logs.

NEPFOSYS process

How a data-first evaluation proceeds.

01

Configuration comparison

NEPFOSYS compares foreign metadata, controller state, expected topology, security, and failure history.

02

Member imaging

Physical disks are assessed and acquired before virtual-drive reconstruction.

03

Virtual drive validation

Candidate layouts are rebuilt from images and checked against filesystems and business priorities.

A clear next step

Questions, answered

What customers ask before starting.

Is Import Foreign Configuration always safe?

No. It can be appropriate for a complete healthy migration, but not when the set is incomplete, stale, failed, locked, or contains unreadable members.

What is the difference between preview and clear?

Preview displays the discovered topology. Clear removes the foreign metadata from controller consideration and should not be used before preservation.

Should I keep the old controller?

Yes. Controller generation, firmware, cache, encryption keys, and configuration can be essential to interpreting or accessing the virtual drive.
