HFS+ mount failure

An HFS+ volume that will not mount may have readable data behind damaged directory structures.

Older Macs and external drives may use Mac OS Extended (HFS+). Mount errors can come from catalog, allocation, journal or volume-header damage, but unstable hardware can produce the same filesystem symptoms.

Understand the symptom

HFS+ depends on coordinated volume headers, catalog records, allocation data and extents.

WHY

What is happening

The catalog maps names and folders, allocation structures track used blocks, extents describe file locations and the journal records pending metadata changes. A mount can fail when these disagree after unsafe removal, power loss or media errors. Recovery first determines whether the source can be imaged safely, then reconstructs filesystem records from the copy.

What you may see

Symptoms that change the recovery path.

01

Volume is gray in Disk Utility

The device may be present while macOS cannot attach the HFS+ filesystem.

02

Invalid node or catalog errors

Directory-tree structures may be inconsistent or unreadable.

03

First Aid cannot repair

The inconsistency may exceed repair capability or originate from bad media.

04

Drive disconnects during mount

Hardware, cable, enclosure or weak-sector faults may interrupt metadata reads.

Protect the source

Actions that can make the situation worse.

01

Repair changes filesystem records

A utility can discard or rewrite structures while attempting consistency.

02

Erase creates a new filesystem

Formatting removes the old volume structures rather than recovering files.

03

Repeated mounts reread weak areas

Failing media may worsen while macOS retries critical catalog sectors.

Do this now

Safe steps before evaluation.

01

Stop repair loops

Do not keep rerunning First Aid after it fails or the device behaves unstably.

02

Record the full device tree

Use Show All Devices to note hardware, partition and HFS+ volume levels without erasing.

03

Preserve cable and enclosure

External bridge and power problems can mimic filesystem failure.

04

Keep the Mac context

Record the macOS version, encryption status and last successful mount.

NEPFOSYS process

How a data-first evaluation proceeds.

01

Hardware-first triage

NEPFOSYS checks whether the device can support controlled imaging before logical repair attempts.

02

Sector acquisition

Readable data is preserved to a separate destination with weak areas handled deliberately.

03

HFS+ reconstruction

Headers, catalog, extents, allocation and file records are interpreted from the image.

A clear next step

Questions, answered

What customers ask before starting.

Should I keep running First Aid?

Not if it fails repeatedly, the drive disconnects or hardware errors appear. Preserve an image before additional repair attempts.

Will erasing the disk make the files return?

No. Erase creates new filesystem structures and can overwrite information needed to reconstruct the prior volume.

Is HFS+ the same as APFS?

No. They use different on-disk structures and recovery methods. Mac OS Extended is HFS+; newer systems commonly use APFS.
