RAW volume guidance

When a drive asks to be formatted, cancel first and diagnose second.

A format prompt means the operating system cannot mount the existing file system in its current state. The cause may be logical corruption, an interrupted write, damaged partition metadata, unreadable sectors, an unstable connection, or failing hardware.

Understand the symptom

RAW describes what the operating system can interpret—not the condition of every file.

WHY

What is happening

Windows labels a volume RAW when it cannot recognize a usable NTFS, exFAT, FAT, or other supported file system. The physical disk may still be detected with the correct capacity while boot sectors, allocation structures, partition records, or critical directory metadata are unreadable. If weak sectors or hardware instability caused the damage, repairing the file system in place can overwrite evidence while continuing to stress the source.

What you may see

Symptoms that change the recovery path.

01

“You need to format the disk”

The device is present, but Windows cannot mount the expected volume and offers to create a new one.

02

RAW in Disk Management

The partition exists but its file-system type is not being interpreted as a valid mounted volume.

03

Correct capacity, missing folders

Partition or directory metadata may be damaged even when the device identifies normally.

04

Prompt plus slow access

Delays, freezes, disconnects, or I/O errors suggest the problem may extend beyond logical corruption.

Protect the source

Actions that can make the situation worse.

01

Quick format writes new metadata

New boot and allocation structures can replace information needed to reconstruct the previous file system.

02

CHKDSK edits the source

File-system repair prioritizes consistency, not preservation of every original name, path, or deleted record.

03

Scanning a failing disk can accelerate loss

If the device stalls or disconnects, obtain a stable image before attempting logical reconstruction.

Do this now

Safe steps before evaluation.

01

Cancel the format prompt

Do not initialize, partition, erase, or create a new volume.

02

Check for hardware warnings

Clicking, impact, heat, odor, unstable capacity, repeated disconnects, or extreme slowness are reasons to stop powering the device.

03

Preserve the original state

Do not save recovered files or disk images onto the affected device.

04

Write down the trigger

Record any power loss, unsafe removal, update, cable change, accidental format, or error message that preceded the prompt.

NEPFOSYS process

How a data-first evaluation proceeds.

01

Determine physical stability

The first decision is whether the source can be read safely enough to image, not whether Windows can mount it.

02

Create a protected working copy

Readable sectors are prioritized into an image while problematic areas are managed according to device condition.

03

Rebuild logical structures

Partitions, file-system records, folders, and file signatures are evaluated from the image with requested data prioritized.

Questions, answered

What customers ask before starting.

Will formatting make the drive usable without losing data?

Formatting creates a new file system and can overwrite recovery metadata. It may make the device appear usable, but it is not a preservation step for the existing files.

Is a RAW drive always physically damaged?

No. RAW can result from logical corruption alone, but weak sectors, unstable hardware, power loss, or connection faults can also damage the file system. Stability must be assessed first.

Should I run CHKDSK on a RAW volume?

Not when the data matters and no protected image exists. CHKDSK changes file-system structures and may discard records it considers inconsistent.
